How to Flip on the OSRS Grand Exchange
Flipping on the Grand Exchange works by exploiting the spread between buy and sell prices. Every item on the GE has two prices: the instant buy price (what impatient buyers pay to get an item immediately) and the instant sell price (what impatient sellers accept to dump items fast). The gap between these two prices is the margin, and that margin is your profit.
To find the current margin on any item, place a buy offer for 1 at a very high price — it will instantly fill at the true buy price. Then sell that same item for 1 GP — it will sell at the true sell price. The difference is your margin. On GE Margin, we calculate this for every tradeable item automatically so you never have to waste time margin checking.
Since May 2025, the Grand Exchange charges a 2% tax on every sale, capped at 5M GP per transaction. This tax is deducted from the seller's proceeds and acts as a gold sink. Your real profit per flip is the margin minus the tax. Use the GE Tax Calculator to see exactly how much tax you'll pay on any item.
Every OSRS account has a buy limit per item — a cap on how many units you can buy within a 4-hour window. High-volume commodities like runes and arrows have limits of 13,000+, while rare gear might have a limit of just 8. Buy limits reset every 4 hours, so plan your flips around these windows. The Flip Finder factors buy limits into its GP/hr estimates automatically.
Serious flippers use all 8 GE slots simultaneously. Each slot can hold one buy or sell offer at a time, so you should always have offers running across multiple items. Diversifying across 8 items protects you from margin crashes on any single item and keeps your gold working at all times. For a complete walkthrough, read our Flipping Guide for Beginners.
Best Items to Flip
The best flip items balance three factors: volume, margin, and buy limit. High volume means your offers fill quickly so your gold isn't sitting idle. A healthy margin (after the 2% tax) means each completed flip actually puts GP in your pocket. And a generous buy limit means you can move enough quantity per 4-hour window to generate meaningful income.
Consistently profitable categories include potions (ranging potions, prayer potions, super restores), runes (nature runes, blood runes, death runes), food (sharks, anglerfish, manta rays), ammunition (dragon arrows, amethyst broad bolts), and mid-tier gear that players buy and sell frequently. Browse our full item database to explore every tradeable item with live margin data, or check the Low Capital Flips guide for picks specifically suited to smaller banks.
Avoid items with suspiciously high margins and near-zero volume — these are often manipulation traps where someone artificially inflates the price. Our flip rating system (1–10) accounts for volume, margin stability, and buy limits to surface genuine opportunities and flag risky ones.
Flipping Tips for 2026
- 1.Use all 8 GE slots. Every idle slot is lost income. Spread your gold across 8 different items to maximise throughput and reduce risk. The Flip Finder makes picking 8 profitable items easy.
- 2.Account for the 2% GE tax. Since the tax increase in May 2025, thin-margin items are less viable. Use the GE Tax Calculator to verify profitability before placing offers.
- 3.Flip during peak hours. The GE is most active between 18:00–23:00 UTC on weekdays and throughout weekends. Higher player counts mean faster fills and tighter spreads. Avoid flipping during dead hours unless you're using overnight mode for slow but steady gains.
- 4.Track your profits. Most flippers overestimate their earnings. Use the Profit Tracker to log every flip and see your real GP/hr over time. Data beats gut feeling.
- 5.Watch for game updates. Every Jagex update shifts supply and demand. New content releases, boss buffs, skill reworks, and seasonal events all create flipping windows. The items that were profitable yesterday may not be tomorrow — check Daily Deals for the latest movers.
- 6.Don't chase manipulated items. If a margin looks too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to items with consistent volume and avoid anything flagged with manipulation warnings. Our Flip Finder includes stability grades (A–F) and manipulation flags to help you avoid traps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is flipping in OSRS?
Flipping is buying items on the Grand Exchange at the instant buy price and reselling them at the instant sell price to profit from the margin. It requires no skills, no combat, and no quests — just starting gold and knowledge of GE mechanics. Most flippers use all 8 GE slots simultaneously to maximise throughput.
How much money can you make flipping?
Experienced flippers with a 50M+ bank typically earn 2–10M GP per hour by filling all 8 GE slots with high-margin items. Beginners with under 1M GP can still make 100–500K GP per hour. Profit scales with capital, game knowledge, and how actively you manage your offers.
Is flipping bannable in OSRS?
No. Flipping is a legitimate game mechanic encouraged by Jagex. The Grand Exchange was designed for player-driven trading. The only rule is you cannot use bots or macros to automate your offers. Manual flipping — buying low, selling high — is entirely within the rules.
What items should I flip?
The best flip items have high trade volume (so offers fill quickly), a positive margin after the 2% GE tax, and a reasonable buy limit. Popular categories include potions, runes, ammunition, food, and high-level gear. Use the Flip Finder on this site for real-time suggestions sorted by GP/hr.
How does the GE tax affect flipping?
Jagex charges a 2% tax on the sell price of every GE transaction, capped at 5M GP per trade. This means your margin must exceed 2% of the sell price just to break even. The tax was introduced as a gold sink and increased from 1% to 2% in May 2025. Use our GE Tax Calculator to see the exact tax on any item.
